1. MALVA, Tourn., Linn. (excl. sp.)

Invollucellum triphyllum, persistens. Petala obcordato-biloba. Tubus stamineus simplex, filamentis singulatim exserentibus. Styli filiformes introrsum stigmatosi (hirtelli). Ovulum in loculis solitarium, peritropo-adscendens. Capsula depressa, polycocca; carpella rotundato-reniformis vel cochleata, omnino mutica, semini conformia, indehiscentia, ab axi centrali secendentia. Semen reniforme, loculum implens. Embryo arcuatus ver semicircularis: radicula infera. — Herbæ gerontogeæ; floribus purpureis, roseis, seu albis.

M. ROTUNDIFOLIA, Linn., is extensively naturalized in North America.

M. BOREALIS, Wallm. (vide supra No. 75), has doubtless been brought from the Old World also.

M. malachroides, Hook. & Arn. Bot. Beech. Suppl., from California, of which the fruit is unknown, is probably of a different genus.
